Florida moms stage a nurse-in

Nurse-ins are not something extraordinary. They probably happen every week or nearly so in some part of the United States. This time our story comes from Orlando, Florida, where more than 30 breastfeeding women descended on a local Chick-Fil-A restaurant Friday afternoon.

The story is the same: a restaurant employee had told a mother to cover up while she was breastfeeding.

Apparently the nurse-in has been successful, since the restaurant says it will educate the staff more about breastfeeding!

Breastfeeding can protect against breast cancer

Another study has come out highlighting the protective effect that breastfeeding has against breast cancer. This time, the researchers found that if a woman has a history of breast cancer in the family, then she can reduce her risk substantially by breastfeeding.

The scientists feel this effect might be related to the inflammation and engorgement that women who do NOT breastfeed experience after giving birth.

You can read more details here.

It was said that breastfeeding is just as effective as Tamoxifen in preventing breast cancer for these high-risk women.

It's quite a timely theme, considering various natural catastrophes we have witnessed in recent years.

* To draw attention to the vital role that breastfeeding plays in emergencies worldwide.
* To stress the need for active protection and support of breastfeeding before and during emergencies.
* To inform mothers, breastfeeding advocates, communities, health professionals, governments, aid agencies, donors, and the media on how they can actively support breastfeeding before and during an emergency.

Topless sunbathing in France

Topless sunbathing on Margarita island

BBC news has a long article about the topic of Breast practice on the riviera. It shows that sadly, the habit of topless sunbathing in French Riviera is no longer nearly as popular as it used to be.

The authors(s) guess at the reasons why this is happening, and to me those reasons do sound just guesses. Maybe some folks will comment on that article to give us more insight.

But, topless beaches still exist. Here's a list of Top 10 Topless Beaches as compiled by Forbes.

Another breastfeeding incident - in IKEA

Another sad incident of public breastfeeding. This time it happened in IKEA. Of course, there ARE more of these happening, but the only ones we get to know about is when someone publishes it. And the moms who do publish their experiences with public feeding CAN often make a difference in turning things for the better.

This time, Sarah Miller was guided to the restroom to breastfeed her infant in a Brooklyn IKEA store. You can read her own testimony on this website. She's planning to file a complaint.

A high school cancels live breastfeeding demo

breastfeedingStudents in a Melbourne high school were about to witness a live breastfeeding demo: Sarah Simmonds, a volunteer from the Australian Breastfeeding Association’s community education program, was to breastfeed her 4-month-old son in front of the class.

But when she arrived, the demo was canceled, because the principal felt students would need parental permission to see breastfeeding!

Read a news article: High School Cancels Breastfeeding Demo

This kind of thinking just makes one angry... I don't want to be angry at the principal per se, because he has just been influenced so strongly by the pervading views of the society about breasts to judge the situation as he did. But, the angry at the "forces" that cause those views to be propagated on and on and on...!

The case of the drunken breastfeeding mom

Stacey Anvarinia, from North Dakota, has now pleaded guilty to child neglect and can face up to 5 years in prison. The police found her breastfeeding her infant while very much drunk.

She will be sentenced on the felony charge Aug. 7.

While everyone seems to have an opinion on this topic, I do not feel I can judge just by the knowledge that she was drunk. Maybe there are some other factor to the case, as well. But if the ONLY thing that was wrong was that she was drunk, then the punishment seems rather strong. It produces a good deal of grief and suffering for any normal mother to be separated from her baby. If it was just a case of one-time drinking, surely such could be settled out of court, and let the baby and mother continue together. But, like I said, I don't know. It's a sad situation, no matter how you look upon it.

Component in colostrum that protects intestines found

Researchers in London have found yet another component of breast milk that is absent from formula: pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor (PSTI). It is found in high levels in colostrum.

PSTI is able to protect AND repair the lining of the intestines, which is important for newborns.

Teen breast augmentations down a bit

Due to the economic recession, teens aren't getting breast implants as often as they did in 2007. This is, quite probably happening because of lack of money - and not because the fixation on large breasts would be going away.

However, at least some of those teens are spared from the physical complications of the breast augmentation procedure. And there are a few less "fake pairs" walking around.

Bra fitting problems video

I just ran across this informative video about common bra fitting problems. The video talks about and shows examples of the band riding at the back, underwires digging in, or breast tissue bulging out.
